Traffic Court
So, I went to court today for my "failure to yield right of way to a pedestrian" ticket. Since my last post on this, I viewed the video tape and found that I was in the wrong. I didn't realize that a pedestrian had to be clear of the lane next to my lane of traffic before I could keep driving. Anyway, traffic court was definitely an education. There was a guy behind me in the check-in line who seemed to be unaware of the fact that showing up to traffic court completely hammered could possibly be frowed upon by the judge...He did give me some interesting legal advice, however. He said that if I would plead Not Guilty (thus getting a trial) and then postponed the trial three times, the courts would most likely dismiss my ticket because it wouldn't be worth the hassle. I found it interesting that someone who knew he was in the wrong would lie and cost taxpayers money just so he could get out of paying (I wasn't too surprised by this, however). So, I plead guilty, since I was. But, because I didn't have any past moving violations on my record, I was offered the option of a pedestrian diversion program. They tell me that if I take this option, I won't have to pay for the ticket (which was $224). I said, um, yeah, I'd definitely like to do that. So, there IS a "filing fee" for this class. The cost? $125. Yep, that's right. It seems a little high to me, but I decide that it's better than $224. Plus, if I don't get any other moving violations in the next 6 months, this will not go onto my record. Pretty cool!
So, I get to go learn about pedestrian safety on Monday, August 14th from 7-9pm. If any of you have any pedestrian safety questions after this time, please let me know. I plan on being a pedestrian safety expert!
